
Unlocking Detox Pathways: The 4 Stages of Liver Cleansing & Foods That Help
In today’s world, our bodies are constantly exposed to a wide range of toxins from food, water, air, and even personal care products. While

The Four Stages of Liver Detoxification

Stage 1: Biotransformation (Cytochrome P450 Enzymes)
In this stage, the liver uses a family of enzymes known as cytochrome P450 to transform fat-soluble toxins into metabolites that can then be converted for elimination. While this process is essential, it can sometimes create reactive substances that are more toxic than the original compounds. Key nutrients supporting this stage include B vitamins, antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin E), and flavonoids such as those found in green tea and colourful fruit and vegetables.

- Sulphation: Detoxifies environmental toxins, neurotransmitters, and hormones, including oestrogen. It depends on sulphur-containing foods like garlic, onions, eggs, and cruciferous vegetables.
- Glucuronidation: Removes bilirubin, hormones (e.g., oestrogen), and some medications like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It requires glucuronic acid and is supported by calcium D-glucarate, magnesium, and B vitamins.
- Glutathionation: Neutralises heavy metals, alcohol, and persistent organic pollutants. Glutathione is the body’s master antioxidant and requires selenium, vitamin C, and NAC (N-acetylcysteine) for optimal function.

- Increase sulphur-rich foods (garlic, onions, Brussels sprouts) to enhance sulphation.

- Include glycine-rich foods (bone broth, legumes, collagen-rich meats) to support detoxification.
Stage 3: Transport and Elimination
After conjugation, the now water-soluble toxins are transported out of the liver via bile or urine. Adequate hydration, fibre intake, and bile flow support this crucial stage. Bitters like dandelion, milk thistle, and artichoke can enhance bile production and promote toxin excretion.
Dietary Support for Stage 3:
- Drink plenty of water to support kidney filtration.
- Consume fibre-rich foods (flaxseeds, chia seeds, whole grains) to bind and remove toxins via the stool.
- Eat bitter foods (dandelion greens, radicchio, artichoke) to stimulate bile flow.
Stage 4: Elimination via the Gut, Kidneys, and Lymphatic System
Once the liver processes toxins, they must exit the body through the stool, urine, or sweat. If elimination is sluggish, toxins can be reabsorbed into circulation, placing additional strain on the body.

- Stay hydrated with filtered water to aid kidney detoxification.
